Are We Close to a Cure for Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes, formally known as juvenile diabetes, is a disease characterized by the inability of patients to produce their own insulin hormone. It currently afflicts an estimated three million Americans. While a rigorous regimen of blood glucose monitoring coupled with daily injections of insulin remains the leading treatment, diabetics still suffer ill effects due to challenges with daily compliance and imperfect blood glucose control.

Dr. Arturo Vegas, who is a leader in the development of targeted therapies, discusses the recent progress to overcome these challenges including the development of automated insulin dosing, the production of mature insulin-producing cells from human stem cells, and new materials that can be used to prevent the rejection of transplanted insulin-producing tissue. These technologies are bringing us closer than ever to mitigating this disease and improving the quality of life for these patients.

After years of trying unsuccessfully to bring his Type 1 diabetes under control, Bob Ethier came to the Transplant Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for help. He learned how a pancreas transplant could "cure" his diabetes. Who is a candidate for a pancreas transplant? What are the risks and how successful is the operation in putting an end to diabetes and its complications? Hear Bob's story.

Surely this could be applied to Cancer in the sense that a Biotechnology/ Bio-material such as Algenate could be used to trick or make the immune system know the Tumor/ Cancer cells are foreign and not of the body's produce and in this way, scar tissue can rapidly form around it which can be manipulated through the use of Drugs and thus inhibit the supply of Oxygen and nutrients to the tumor?

You guys need to hear what he is saying. He's basically saying that we are RIGHT THERE!!!!!! There is only at least one step left. He said that he is confident within 20 years which means that within 10 years he will have cured it otherwise meaning if something came up the extra 10 is just for insurance. The medical treatment companies will run out of excuses and will have to cave because there will be riots everywhere!!!! People will destroy the manufacturing plants. We will have a cure no matter what. Be patience and wait it out. It's only a matter of time. I am very confident that this man will lead us to that cure. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS WE WHO HAVE THE DISEASE NEED TO HAVE HOPE AND IF THE TIME COMES WHERE BUSINESS TRYS TO TAKE CONTROL OF IS THEN TAKE ACTION

  9. I hope I am wrong but living with this and the costs of strips, insulin, pumps, and much more. Big business and the thousands of jobs and profit gives reasons to never cure Diabetes. when I was diagnosed at a young age I asked my Dr. in tears and terror having family member die. the Dr. and I believe he believed what he told me said I am only guessing but I think five years. That was almost 50 years ago. As a child I ate like I did not even have diabetes. Testing back then was urinating into a cup and putting a stick into the urine the stick would change color. It was gross. When the 80s came around they came out with a meter that you almost needed to be a engineer to use. It was probably me but as I remember you had to put blood on stick wait a certain amount of time then wipe the blood off. This is how I remember it who knows?
As I say big business is making Billions, why would they come up with cure? Today with all the testing , pumps, different types of insulin life has become a lot easier. There is never a day you can ignore it. I will end saying this. I have lived so long with this is I had the choice if we could live another life when we die I would want it again. I'm not sure why other than its been most of my life, its me. My life is in my hands daily. I could not imagine not having diabetes.

  10. Are you kidding me?? This guy gives the option of no diabetes vs. lifetime immune suppression and he says "guess what, you'll go with glucose monitoring" DUDE!!!!!!! Come on!! YOU GLUCOSE MONITOR FOR 15 YEARS AND THEN TELL ME YOU WOULDNT TRADE ANYTHING TO GIVE THAT UP! I bet you couldn't last a day doing what a diabetic does. Just cure it. Screw FDA standards. We're talking about quality of life. So let us have a decent quality of life

  17. anyone who is thinking they would like to go apply for a pancreas transplant know this... You need 2 transplants at one time your pancreas and your liver, and doctors normally won't do this type of surgery unless your liver is in need of a transplant as well, also you must forever take pills being antirejection drugs, and to top all that mess off it may just die again, or your body could reject one or both organs and you could die. :(

  23. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder in which the body sees insulin producing beta cells as an invader and destroys them leaving the body unable to produce insulin. So I thought that if you put a new pancreas into a type 1 diabetic the body would eventually destroy that pancreas too. The transplant would eventually fail after a few years and Type 1 diabetes would return.

  30. I've had type 1 diabetes for 18 years. Hello noobs. I was diagnosed at 2 years old. It's easy until you become a teenager. Hormones screw everything and make it very difficult. I got an insulin pump when I was 14. I can't believe some people don't have one yet, and it should be law for every doctor to recommend one. It makes things about twice as easy to manage. It comes with it's off days or nights, maybe it malfunctions, the tubing gets jammed, but for the majority of the time it's very well worth it. I am also a skateboarder and I live life to the fullest. There are occasions where I become incredibly sick and must endure things like driving home from work running to the toilet and throwing up everything in my stomach because I had no supplies in the car to bring my glucose below 400/500. These occasions are rare and almost always simple, mostly human error. I am blessed with the ability to function quite well even with bloodsugar as low as 25, so lows are not very much a problem for me. High blood sugar however causes a burning sensation on my eyes, headache, severe nausea, and my muscles along my forearms and calves ache quite a bit. Keep in mind these are the low level symptoms that I must live with and will happen in any real, lively situation. The symptoms intensify quite heavily if you don't drink water and urinate. Then you'll go into ketoacidosis. Some days I want to lay down in a quiet room until I feel better, but I just can't. I wouldn't mind a transplant with a 10-15% chance to die, but I know I don't have that kind of cash.
